The straight line, real or imaginary, round which a body revolves; a straight line in a plain figure, about which it revolves to produce a solid; a right line dividing the section into two equal parts, and cutting all its ordinates at right angles; the second vertebra of the neck, with an upward process on which the atlas turns; the central part or column of a plant, around which the other parts are disposed; a particular ray of light from any object falling perpendicularly on the eye, called also the optic or visual axis.
