It is located on the seventh human chromosome. In the past, mutations of this gene were associated with the development of cystic fibrosis, a life-threatening genetic disorder that affects the lungs, digestive system and other organs. If a person is born with a mutated CFTR gene, their body produces an abnormal form of a protein which causes the cells to become damaged and absorb too much salt which can lead to a whole host of complications.
