Clew is a term used to refer to a ball of thread or yarn. It is most often used in a mythological context, when describing how the Greek hero Theseus was able to find his way out of the Minotaur's Labyrinth. According to the myth, the Princess Ariadne gave Theseus an enchanted clew, which unravalled itself as he ventured deep into the Labyrinth. In this way, he was able to escape the Labyrinth safely and returned successfully to Athens.
