Comprehension is the ability to understand something. It is the process of making sense of information, ideas, or experiences. It involves listening to and interpreting what is heard, thinking about what is read, or interpreting what is observed. Comprehension involves both a cognitive component--thinking and analyzing--and an affective component--teasing out the meaning.

To comprehend something, one must be able to comprehend both the literal meaning of the words in the text and the implied meaning of the text. Comprehension involves drawing inferences, making connections, and relating the information to background knowledge.
