General George Armstrong custer was a veteran of the U.S. Civil War and an avid outdoorsman. He is most famously remembered for his leadership in the Battle of Little Bighorn against the Sioux and Cheyenne nations on June 25, 1876. The battle ended with the U.S. Cavalry's defeat and it is one of the most iconic events in American history. Custer was born in 1839 in Ohio and attended West Point Military Academy, graduating in 1861. He quickly rose in rank and was brevetted Major General by the end of the Civil War.
