Gere is an English surname of Norman origin. It is a derivative of the French surname "Gerre", which in turn is derived from the Germanic personal name "Gerhard". Gere was an early Norman name borne by several members of English high society, especially in the North of England. The most famous holders of the name were members of the Gere dynasty who, from the mid-14th century onwards, were prominent landowners in Cumberland, Yorkshire and Oxfordshire. The Gere family, who produced a number of distinguished medieval knights and noblemen, were among the earliest Norman families to establish themselves in England.
