"Jacobitic" in context
Jacobitism was an 18th century movement which supported the restoration of the Stuart dynasty to the British throne. It was a political concept that developed in response to the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and aimed to restore the monarchy of King James II and his heirs in England, Scotland and Ireland. Jacobites believed that the legitimacy of the current dynasty of William and Mary was illegal and wished to reverse the coup d'etat carried out by the Whigs (Protestants) in 1688 and restore the rightful heirs to the throne.
