KLF4 is a type of transcription factor, a type of protein found inside a cell which controls which genes are turned 'on' or 'off'. It has a very important role in the regulation of normal cell growth and development, particularly in embryonic stem cells. KLF4 was first discovered in 1994 and since then has been found to be involved in processes such as cell differentiation, cell programming, proliferation and apoptosis. KLF4 has also been linked to a few diseases such as cancer, diabetes and asthma. In addition, it has been studied in terms of its involvement in possible treatments for these conditions.
