Merle is a feature found in certain breeds of dogs, and is a result of a mutated gene which causes the coat to have patches of different colors. This can range in severity, from dogs whose coats are mostly one color with only a few patches, to those whose whole coat is of multiple colors. Merle dogs can be found in many breeds, including Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs and Australian Shepherds, and have become increasingly popular in recent years.
