The pleura is a thin layer of tissue that lines the outside of the inner cavity of the chest and surrounds the lungs. It is composed of two layers, the parietal pleura which is a tissue sheet that covers the chest wall and the visceral pleura which covers the lungs. The pleural cavity between the two layers contains a thin layer of serous fluid to facilitate easy movement of the lungs in respiration.

The pleural cavity is also used for the collection and drainage of fluids, for example pleural effusion.
