Takahe are birds native to New Zealand. They are an endangered species, and as a result, conservation efforts have been made to protect them. They are amongst the world's rarest birds, and are thought to be the heaviest surviving member of the rail family.

Takahe are large, stocky birds with bright blue-green feathers, a red bill and yellow eyes. They live mainly on seed and plant material, although they will sometimes eat insects to supplement their diet. They can be found in a variety of habitats, from grasslands and shrublands to wetlands.
