"Trows" in context
Trows are traditional Norse wooden boats. Once used for fishing and for travelling between Norway and the Shetland Islands, these boats were characterized by their flat bottoms, shallow draught and narrow hulls, making them ideal for navigating shallow waters. These vessels were made from a combination of pine, birch and oak, and were decked with canvas or boiled linseed oil for protection.
Trows were usually operated by a crew of two with the help of a rudder and a large pole, which was used to direct the trow around rocks and other underwater obstacles.
