Dismay is an emotional response to something unexpected, upsetting or unwelcome. It can be characterized by feelings of fear, shock, uncertainly, confusion and sorrow. Common reactions to dismal situations include speechlessness, anxiety and/or depression. It is a form of emotional distress that can cause an individual to feel powerless or hopeless.

Common causes of dismay include the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, a serious medical diagnosis, a broken relationship or a financial crisis. It is a normal and natural emotion, however can become overwhelming if it begins to consume one's life.
