"LCROSS" in context

LCROSS stands for Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite and is a lunar exploration program. It was a mission conducted by NASA in order to find evidence of water ice on the moon. The spacecraft was launched in June 2009 and it consisted of two parts: a shepherding spacecraft and an impactor. The shepherding spacecraft was launched with the impactor and the two were connected by a cable. The impactor was released four and a half hours before it impacted the lunar surface in order to collect data. A few weeks later, the shepherding spacecraft would fly close to the moon in order to observe the impact and its results.
