The Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force, or WAAAF, was established in March 1941 as part of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). It was the largest women's volunteer organisation in the country and was open to any female aged between 17 and 50. The WAAAF helped to free up men in the Air Force to fight in the Second World War, allowing them to take on more combat roles. Its members served in across a variety of roles in both Australia and abroad, ranging from radio operators to aircraft fitters, armament personnel, meteorologists, engineers and more.
