"Mir" in context

Mir (Russian for "Peace") was the first space station to be permanently staffed by a human crew and was the longest-serving space station ever created. It was in orbit for 15 years from 1986-2001, orbiting the planet Earth.

It was launched by the Soviet Union and later taken over by the Russian Federal Space Agency. The station included six modules, which housed the living quarters and provided a variety of science experiments and station maintenance.

The station was home to several long-duration missions, during which astronauts and cosmonauts stayed aboard the station for several months at a time.
