Syria is a Middle Eastern country located in the eastern Mediterranean region. It was once part of the ancient region of Mesopotamia, and is one of the oldest culturally rich nations in the world. In 2011, the Syrian Civil War began when anti-government protesters took to the streets, sparking a devastating multi-sided war which has so far claimed the lives of more than 250,000 people, created millions of refugees, and displaced millions more. The war has caused immense destruction of infrastructure, widespread displacement of populations, and widespread human rights violations.
