Taine (also known as Thivolet-Gaultier-Dozon) is a French philosophical and literary critic who helped shape the philosophy of positivism. He was born Hippolyte-Adolphe Taine in 1828 in Vouziers, in the Ardennes region of France. He attended the College Sainte-Barbe in Paris, and then the École Normale Superieure, where he was taught by the influential French philosopher Victor Cousin.
