"Laius" in context

Laius was a ruler in the Greek mythology, a king of Thebes and son of Labdacus. He was married to Jocasta and together they had a son Oedipus. As the story goes, Laius was warned by an Oracle that his son was destined to murder his father and marry his mother. To prevent this prophecy, Laius abandoned the baby at birth, sending him away to be killed. Although his cruel actions have earned him some criticism among modern readers, his intentions were probably meant to protect himself and his family from harm.
